Hockenheim Highlights: From Technical Issues to Podium Celebrations

The weather, like in Hockenheim, was a mix of rain and sunshine. Our race results were similar.

Starting with the first free practice, in which Wolfgang drove the third fastest time on a wet track (1:23.719s), while Bernd had to sit out the practice run due to technical difficulties.

After the track had dried and it was time for the second free practice, we were then able to send both our drivers onto the track. Bernd drove the fastest lap with an excellent time of 1:17.532, and Wolfgang secured 5th place (1:21.859s).

In qualifying, Bernd unfortunately could not repeat his time from free practice, and so he had to settle for third place behind fellow countryman Ingo Gerstl and Klaas Zwart. Wolfgang was a bit unlucky and couldn't drive a single unobstructed lap, so he only managed 8th place on the starting grid.

The first race then took unexpected turns. The first setback came in the formation lap, in which a technical defect forced Bernd to park his Benetton early.

All the more pleasing was that Wolfgang fought his way up from position 8 to position 3 and thus took his first podium of the season and at the same time 2nd place in the OPEN class.

On Sunday in the second race, the whole thing took another 180-degree turn. Wolfgang was taken out by Hans Laub right at the start of the race, and so the race ended early for both drivers.

Bernd, on the other hand, drove a sensational race and was able to fight his way from position 17 to position 3, securing a well-deserved podium place.

In the overall standings after 2 of 7 races, Bernd and Wolfgang are now in 4th and 5th place.
